Aftermath of Alaska Summit
What took place before the meeting, has been analyzed both by myself and by a large number of international experts. Here the latest articles, which includes number of links to those analyses by international experts:

Western mainstream media described the Alaska Summit as an event where Putin came back to the international stage but the media has misunderstood the current world affairs like BRICS and SCO, Global South etc.
Two weeks after Alaska, there’s the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) annual summit in Tianjin, China. India’s Narendra Modi and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian will join, among others, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin at the same table.
September 3, in Beijing, is the 80th anniversary of the victory of “the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War”. Putin is the guest of honor. On the same day, in Russia’s Vladivostok, it’s the start of the Eastern Economic Forum, which discusses everything about Russia’s drive to develop the Arctic and eastern Siberia. Key Eurasian players will be in the house. Putin addresses the plenary session on September 5.
Top BRICS leaders of China, Russia, Brazil and India, meanwhile, are actively involved in a flurry of phone calls coordinating a collective response to the US tariff wars against BRICS and the Global South.
Prologue
All eyes are directed now on Alaska. The “Bear-Eagle face-off” is part of an astonishing acceleration of history in the summer of 2025. A new climax emerged as an aftermath of Alaska Summit, a new meeting of Trump and Zelensky in Washington on August 18, where also a group of European leaders are coming, coalition of willing.

Many western political commentators belittle the meeting saying that Trump is just aiming for a PR win. The summit was announced following what Putin advisor Yuri Ushakov concisely defined as “a proposal from the American side which we think is quite acceptable.”
As Ukraine’s defeat becomes undeniable on the battlefield, Zelensky resorts to desperate provocations – risking wider conflict to block peace talks between Russia and the US
The war in Ukraine is no longer balanced on a knife’s edge, as some might have thought during the Kursk invasion. The outcome is now visible to anyone willing to look past the headlines: Kiev’s forces are depleted, morale is collapsing and the long-promised ‘turning points’ have come and gone without materializing, despite the massive western aid. Even Western officials, once confident in endless military aid, are now speaking in guarded tones about “realistic expectations.” On the battlefield, the momentum has shifted irreversibly for Russia.

Alaska Summit on Friday August 15 – Where is the beef
The western msm belittled the results of the summit. The meeting between US and Russian presidents, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, was described as a short step towards peace in Ukraine but with no steps toward ceasefire and Putin’s invitation to Moscow. The meeting has yielded more questions than answers, without an concrete results.
Trump welcomed Putin back on world stage with red carpet. Trump waited for Putin on a red carpet spread across the runway of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. As Putin approached, Trump clapped. The two leaders warmly shook hands and smiled.
That the Alaska summit happened at all was a victory for Putin. But this welcome would have surpassed the Kremlin’s wildest dreams.
The summit may have failed to yield any tangible progress towards peace in Ukraine, but it cemented the rapprochement between Russia and the US. Pictures of the two presidents repeatedly shaking hands and grinning travelled far and wide on social media – as did images of American servicemen kneeling as they rolled out the red carpet at the foot of Putin’s plane.
The two leaders gave statements and took no questions from reporters.

⚡️Right now! TRUMP’S FIRST STATEMENT after the NEGOTIATIONS. These words shocked everyone
War Live, August 16, 2025
Putin was the first to speak. He praised the “constructive atmosphere of mutual respect” of the “neighbourly” talks, and then launching into a condensed history of Alaska’s past as a Russian territory. As he spoke, Trump stood in silence. It was several minutes before the Russian president mentioned what he called the “situation in Ukraine” – ostensibly the catalyst for the summit. When he did, it was to state that although an unspecified “agreement” had been reached, the “root causes” of the conflict had to be eliminated before peace could be achieved. With this, it was clear that there was no deal.
Before wrapping up his statement, Putin referenced one of the US president’s frequent talking points – that the conflict in Ukraine would have never started had Trump been in power.
Despite Trump’s assertion of “great progress”, nothing of substance was unveiled at the Alaska summit – yet the two leaders left the door open for another meeting, this time on Russian soil. “I’ll probably see you again very soon,” Trump said.
Media & PR meeting and other meetings
When studying closely the list of participants and the procedures of the summit, it is obvious that the question was of much larger and manifold meeting than merely an issue of Ukraine.
The meeting brought together, in addition to the presidents, several key figures from both countries. On the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, and the Russian President’s economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev participated. On the American side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe attended. Later also Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth joined the American team. Both delegations were up to 20 participating experts. The summit was organized with joint meetings between the delegations, as well as time for private conversations between the presidents.
In fact, there were three key meetings: one of media and PR meeting (Trump, Rubio, Witkoff and Putin, Lavrov, Ushakov), other meeting of sanctions, finance and economic cooperation (Scott Bessent, Howard Lutnik and Anton Siluanov, Kirill Dmitriev) and the third meeting of military and security (John Ratcliffe, Pete Hegseth and Andrey Belousov, Yuri Ushakov). The range of topics discussed was wide: bilateral relations and cooperation, energy, rare earth minerals, trade and industry, sanctions and finance, nuclear agreements and other military affairs as well as the Ukraine issue.
One key matter was a return to diplomatic procedures in the relations of the US and Russia, after many years and “dead” relations. According to Trump, the Alaska Summit went well but on the other hand, this summit gave little to Zelensky and the EU.

The BIG WINNER of the Alaska Summit and Why it MATTERS Now
Sebastian Sas August 16, 2025
The BIG WINNER of the Alaska Summit and Why it MATTERS Now Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have met in Alaska and have discussed the war in Ukraine and future cooperation between the US and Russia. The two leaders have held a press conference after the Summit in Alaska and both of them seemed happy with the outcome. After the summit has concluded, Donald Trump has called the NATO leaders, the EU leaders and Zelensky and have had a lengthy conversation. Zelensky is now expected to travel to Washington to meet Donald Trump on Monday. The EU leaders have issued a joint statement regarding the statement in Alaska. The next step will probably be a trilateral meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Zelensky, potentially in Moscow.
Summarizing The Summit
On Friday, 15 August 2025 the summit between President Trump and President Putin took place, leaving the world guessing about what was really achieved there. By all appearances, it wasn’t a lot but it’s certain that much of what was discussed was done in secret and is not yet for public consumption. At any rate, both leaders appeared very satisfied with the encounter which Trump rated a ten out of ten. Vladimir Putin affirmed his belief that if Donald Trump were President in 2020, the war in Ukraine would not have happened. The summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin was shorter than had been planned. But it was mostly successful.
Trump had urgently needed the meeting. He had pushed for a ceasefire in Ukraine. He had threatened to impose secondary sanctions against buyers of Russia’s oil to press Russia towards that. But Russia did not budge. Its interest is to eliminate the root cause of the war in Ukraine – the expansion of NATO towards Russia’s borders. A ceasefire would only have paused the war but would not have solved the underlying issue.
For Trump the threat of secondary sanctions had become a trap. Some rather mild addition of tariffs against India had led to a strong backlash. India did not stop buying Russian oil but turned away from the US to endorse BRICS, Russia and China. Imposing secondary sanctions against China would have escalated into a trade war with China which the US has no way to win.
The summit created a win for each side.
Trump acknowledged that a ceasefire was not possible and that the war needs to end with an all-encompassing peace agreement:
“A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO. It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up. President Zelenskyy will be coming to D.C., the Oval Office, on Monday afternoon. If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin. Potentially, millions of people’s lives will be saved. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
After he had given Putin that part of the cake Trump took his own piece. There will be no ceasefire to freeze the conflict and there will be no sanctions. Both sides can count that as wins. The task of ending the conflict was tossed off to Zelensky and Europe. Without hesitating, Trump said that his advice to Zelenskyy after Friday’s meeting with Putin would be “make a deal.” On Monday Zelenski will be told to give up and to make peace with Russia.
Naturally, the US government used the event to promote Donald Trump’s image as a “peacemaker.” Therefore, optimistic analysts hoped the summit would end with some kind of peace protocol or at least a ceasefire agreement signed. However, realistically, this was impossible, considering the material circumstances of the conflict.
However, the summit was extremely positive in restoring bilateral relations between the two countries and thus reducing global tensions. More than that, the event served as an opportunity for Putin to directly explain to Trump the fundamental reasons for the conflict. The American president appears to have changed his mind on the ceasefire issue.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Trump stated that the original causes of the conflict must be resolved, otherwise any truce will be fragile and temporary. Both leaders appear to have finally reached a common understanding that the real problems behind the hostilities must be eliminated, including mutual security guarantees for Ukraine and Russia.
Unfortunately, the future of the war does not depend solely on the US. The EU currently maintains the same stance as the Democrats, fomenting war at all costs. Putin even expressed concern that European countries will attempt to boycott the current negotiations between Moscow and Washington.
Trump, for his part, stated that he has an excellent relationship with Putin and that he considers the Russian president a friend, which is why he believes in a peaceful solution. Furthermore, both leaders are now considering holding a new round of talks, with Putin extending a public invitation in English to Trump to come to Moscow. The presidents agreed that dialogue will soon be needed to overcome confrontation in bilateral relations.
The meeting served to address several other topics of common interest, in addition to Ukraine, such as trade, energy, technology, and space, as well as the importance of Russia-US interaction in the Arctic. The Russian ambassador to the US stated that a project to restore direct flights between Russia and the US has been established, and technical discussions are now underway on how to implement the plan.
In the end, the meeting was much more about restoring Russian-American ties than about resolving the Ukrainian conflict. Ukraine was a key point in the talks, but the summit had a greater value: reestablishing direct, high-level dialogue between the world’s two leading nuclear powers.
Inevitably, improved ties between Russia and the US raise hopes for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine. The war began as NATO’s proxy aggression against Russia. Historically, the US has led NATO, so this direct dialogue allows for a de-escalation of the global tensions behind the Ukrainian conflict.
Unfortunately, the current trend is for the EU to continue funding the war regardless of the US stance and the Zelensky regime itself is likely to fight with all its remaining forces to prevent the country’s corrupt elite from being removed from power.

The fate of Russian frozen assets. One of the outcomes of Russia-US cooperation, obviously will resolve the fate of the Russian frozen assets held by Western countries. The amount in question is estimated at $300 to $335 billion. Most of these assets by far are held in Europe: the largest portion is managed by Belgium-based Euroclear central securities depository, which holds between $190 to $208 billion. France held up to $71 billion in Russian Central Bank assets, while the UK holds about $37 billion. The US portion is estimated at only $5 billion to $8 billion, primarily in debt securities and cash.
Most likely, Donald Trump will be keenly interested to have Russia invest that money in the US. For their part, the Russians have every reason in the world to accommodate Trump and such an investment deal would certainly go a long way to advancing the two powers’ cooperation. If anything about Donald Trump is predictable, it is that he’ll want those assets in the US in order to rearm, reindustrialize and Make America Great Again. Possibly, one day soon, the news will report that with Trump’s backing, the Russians ordered their assets held in Europe to be transferred to US custody. The Eurotards will have no recourse but to comply.
China commented the situation in Global Times:
Trump shifts ceasefire position on Russia-Ukraine conflict, leaving Ukraine, Europe in dismay: media By Global Times Published: Aug 17, 2025
“Dismayed” European leaders will hold a virtual meeting on Sunday and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will hurry to Washington DC on Monday to meet US President Donald Trump, as US President on Saturday split from key European allies and Kiev after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, backing Putin’s plan for a sweeping peace agreement based on Ukraine ceding territory it controls to Russia, instead of the urgent ceasefire Trump had said he wanted before the meeting, according to media reports. Skipping ceasefire discussions would give Russia an advantage in the talks, which are expected to continue on Monday when Zelensky visits Trump at the White House. It will be their first meeting since the disastrous Oval Office fallout in March, which quickly devolved into chaos, media reported.
European desperate endeavor to carry on Ukraine war
European leaders, Coalition of willing, are not hiding their disappointment on the results of the Alaska Summit. They hold a virtual meeting and published a joint statement supporting robustly Zelensky and Ukraine’s warfare. A surprising news emerged that the whole gang of European leaders will fly to Washington in order to “support” Zelensky in his talks with Trump.

Washington calling on Monday, August 18
Here are the key timings for today’s meetings in Washington:
- 12:00 EST (17:00 BST): European leaders arrive at the White House
- 13:00 EST (18:00 BST): Zelensky will be greeted by Trump, before heading into a bilateral meeting 15 minutes later
- 14:15 EST (19:15 BST): Trump greets the European leaders
- 15:00 EST (20:00 BST): The meeting between European leaders and President Trump begins
President Trump concluded that a ceasefire would not work, for the reason that seven previous ceasefires in Ukraine failed and only reinforced distrust and disappointment between the warring parties. Instead, the goal is a peace settlement, an end to the war. The US and Russia cannot make peace in Ukraine because the war is between Ukraine and Russia. The US can only mediate and propose terms. Ukraine needs help formulating terms that are not preposterous. Russia’s terms have been clear and precise for years, most particularly: no NATO for Ukraine.
The US helped start this conflict in Maidan 2014, when Mr. Obama was in charge. It was always a cynical operation, in concert with the cynics of the EU. Trump has now called it off, recognizing the foolish futility of the scheme. But the EU players persist maniacally, even though they don’t have the money or the armaments to keep it up and are otherwise jointly committing slow suicide of their own societies.

Anyway, Ukraine is exhausted. Ukraine has lost. Territorial realities must be faced. Agreements must be made. For the moment, Mr. Zelenskyy is the one who must be brought to agreement. His term as elected president of Ukraine ended in May 2024 and he only continues to occupy his position under martial law, self-declared. The Russians recognize his leadership as a contingency, because there is nobody else just now. Mr. Trump will be discussing Mr. Zelenskyy’s fate with him today in the White House.

Perhaps Mr. Trump will ask the Eurolanders to wait in the nearby Roosevelt Room while he confabs one-to-one with Mr. Z and makes various offers that Mr. Z can’t refuse. Then, they can all convene together in the Oval for coffee and donuts and review the results of that confab. If ever a situation for the mass humiliation of European heads-of-state had been conceived previously, this will be the topper and then let’s stand by to see whether Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s airplane flies back to Kiev or takes an unexpected detour to, say, Abu Dhabi.
After the talk with Zelenski Trump has a meet and greet with a bunch of European premiers, chancellors and presidents. They want the war to continue which requires to keep the US involved in it. Their main talking point and request will be a ‘security guarantee’ for Ukraine which, they say, will require US involvement and backing. Being asked about it during an interview Trump’s Russia envoy Stephen Witkoff gave a polite response: “The United States is potentially prepared to be able to give Article 5 security guarantees, but not from NATO — directly from the United States and other European countries,” Witkoff said in a “Fox News Sunday” interview.
Update1835ET: President Trump has issued a major statement following the high stakes afternoon meetings with Ukraine’s Zelensky, who finally put on a suit this time, and seven EU leaders. Trump announced that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone and initiated plans for a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. There is further after that a trilateral meeting coming, at an as yet undisclosed time and place. He called the development “very good” and said “everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE”.

Ukraine & NATO’s MIRACLE MENTALITY /Lt Col Daniel Davis
Daniel Davis / Deep Dive August 19, 2025
The discussion argues that Europe cannot realistically replace U.S. military, financial, and intelligence support for Ukraine. Europe and Zelensky are seen as locked in a “mutually abusive” dynamic, prolonging a war that math and physics suggest cannot be won. Ukraine’s strategy relies on “miracle thinking,” hoping for sudden shifts like coups in Russia, but the fundamentals of attrition mean eventual collapse. The speaker stresses that Trump must hold firm against European pressure, since Europe lacks the capacity and resources to sustain the war alone—it would bankrupt them and further expose NATO’s weakness.
NATO’s long-term survival is questioned: while elites may keep it alive for vested interests, its real military capacity—especially European ground forces—is weak compared to Russia and China’s ability to fight wars of attrition. NATO risks becoming a hollow alliance, surviving on paper but incapable of sustaining conflict. Public rhetoric about Russia as both weak and an existential threat is called contradictory, and reliance on nuclear deterrence is emphasized as the real check on Russian ambitions, not European conventional forces. 👉 Core message: Europe cannot replace U.S. leadership in Ukraine; NATO is militarily weak despite political posturing; elites on both sides of the Atlantic push the war for their own interests, while Trump’s firmness could decide whether it continues or winds down.
Zelensky, EU Visit IRRELEVANT, Russia is Demilitarizing NATO –Andrei Martyanov
Rachel Blevins August 19, 2025
Trump was joined by Zelensky and a slew of European politicians at the White House on Monday, following his summit with Putin in Alaska. But while there was talk of “security guarantees” for Kiev and Trump made it clear he is now pushing for a deal to end the war, rather than a temporary ceasefire, there’s still no indication NATO is planning to address Russia’s list of “root causes” anytime soon. Veteran, Author and Russian Military Expert, Andrei Martyanov, noted that the frenzy at the White House was largely irrelevant, as Western politicians can pledge whatever they want, but they don’t have the weapons and capacity to back it up. And Russia is still making progress on the battlefield where it is “demilitarizing NATO” in this proxy war.
